If you think building evacuation is never going to happen to your strata scheme, take a good look at what is happening in NSW currently with a number of buildings in the media and owners displaced in what is considered unprecedented. Many kinds of emergencies can lead to a need for evacuation. In some cases, you may have a day or two to prepare while in the event of a sudden catastrophic event, you may have just minutes to gather your family and get out of your house—possibly for good.

Are you ready to flee your house or place of business in the case of a disaster? What would you take? Where would you go?Ā While the future is unpredictable, there are some things you can do to prepare.Ā Being prepared is vital not only for saving your life and the lives of others around you but after Grays Rescue Building Management’s involvement in evacuating residents from buildings, we have seen that it’s the simple things you prepare that make the difference from being caught out without your essentials.

Plan somewhere to stay. Identify places you can go and how to get there in the event of an evacuation. If your family members become separated before or during the evacuation, make a plan to meet at a specific location.

What to take? Having a pre-written checklist is the first step in determining what you value the most. Whatever you decide, make sure you go with things that are necessary to continue functioning for work and home life. Keep vital documents in a secure location where you can get to them quickly.

Also, make a list of everything you own.Ā It will come in handy if you need to apply for disaster relief.
